The objection uniting this politically diverse group of bishops and clergy, is NOT to the entire concept of universal health care but to the violence done to the conscience of those who object to being required to fund birth control, sterilization and abortion in whole or in part.

I don’t believe the Catholic Church is immune from criticism or mockery. Miranda just wrote this post doing just those things and on one seems to be stopping her.

I have no problem with the position the clergy are taking in that communique. However, the question I have is why do they not also insist that everyone in this country have full access to this health care? It would seem to me that insisting on full health care for all is precisely the type of thing Christianity requires of us. So given that we are talking about health care why wouldn’t Christian clergy bring up all the requirements Christian belief, and specifically the teachings of Jesus, into the discussion. Yes, Jesus wanted life respected and protected, but he also wanted us to take care of all those in need. Yet through our health care system we fail to do that. I think it is a mistake, religiously, theologically, politically, and from a humanitarian point of view to focus so much on the former and remain so quiet about the latter.

Apparently the corruption of which you complain extends not simply to the 180 or so US Catholic bishops but to hundreds of other US religious leaders for they also are complaining of the HHS edict. I suppose they are all dupes of the bishops.
